That’s right! By using 'fill flash' you will be able to get proper exposure on your subject when they are in a situation where they are backlit. What you will do is set your flash setting to ‘forced flash’. On most cameras, this is the little lightning bolt all by itself. When your subject is backlit (meaning most of the light is coming from behind your subject), you will properly expose your subject (IF you followed Snap Tip #3 and learned what the effective range of your flash is.) For example, if your subject were standing in front of a window or, like in the examples below, standing on the beach with the sun coming from behind them, you would use forced flash.
While this first example isn't exactly terrible, it could stand some improvement.
Now that I have turned on my 'forced flash', she is properly illuminated, and the background looks great too. Also, you will notice that I followed 'Snap Tip #2 - Get close and get low". See what a difference it makes?
Lets Review!!!
Snap Tip #1 - Find Your Manual and have it handy!
Snap Tip #2 - Get Close and Get Low
Snap Tip #3 - Know the Effective Range of Your Flash
Snap Tip #4 - Use Your Flash Outdoors
So grab your camera, set it on ‘forced flash’ and head outside for a whole new experience using 'fill flash'!
Be sure and let me know how it goes by commenting after you’ve tried it.
Happy Snapping!!!
